But here's where I'm worried - I found nothing in the announcement that deals with Advanced Gravis other than it being compatible with it. Even from the quotes above, it seems AMD will be releasing the chip to other manufacturers. The custom patch thing is largely for Composers, not game companies. > So if this trend continues (and more than likely it will), Gravis >should re-do some (actually... most) their patches, or at least change the >volume mapping of the patches to match those of the Sound Canvas. Most sound card companies companies simply license a patch set from someone else and don't bother making the effects. They _have_ been improveing the patches from one distribution set to another, but just not amazingly well. The GUS's GMIDI is never going to be as good as the Sound Canvas's.. if you want better sound, go poke at the propats. > Gravis could even implement some MIDI effects as well, like >chorus, reverb, echo, etc via software. No.. they could not. I don't want to get into an argument about using multiple channels as this would drop it below the number of channels to meet a GMIDI spec, nor will I entertain any notion of reverbing individual patches.. this is NOT proper reverb and will sound BAD. >Does anyone see my point? Yes: try the MIDAS Windows drivers. These install like WAV and MID drivers i.e. you can then play S3Ms from Media Player. Unfortunately, like all such programs, playing using native GUS involves disabling the GUS windows drivers, so you *lose* midi, wav etc. You can still play with sound-mixing and have everything else work. I can't remember the filename but it's on EPAS mirrors. > Subject: difference Max/Ace > > Can anyone tell me what the exact differences are between the Max and > the Ace. Is it only the CD-Rom connection or are there other hardware > things that are different. I ask this because i have a IDE cd-rom ACE has no CD-ROM, no recording, no joystick ports, and no midi. The card is physically smaller as well. I think those are the only differences. [win95 question] Gravis said a native driver would be ready by the official Win95 release. > From: Ted Ching > Subject: Improving MIDI playback > > Is Gravis going to work on improving General MIDI playback? Don't be surprised that it doesn't compare. > Gravis could even implement some MIDI effects as well, like > chorus, reverb, echo, etc via software. These are not possible, as there is no DSP (apart from the dedicated one that just does voice playback). > Does anyone see my point? The GUS's General MIDI playback is very poor, > even when compared to even a SB AWE(ful) 32! I couldn't tell the difference between the two, personally, at a computer show once. AWE is technically superior also (it has the filters and effects, though the effects are not too good). The problem is, unfortunately, a hardware one. And the solution is, upgrade to a card that uses InterWave, when this comes out, which definitely has support for add-on DSPs, and I hope has the filters. On the subject of default patches: I thought it was generally agreed that AWE defaults were *worse* than GUS defaults? (no surprise - AWE defaults are 1 meg, GUS defaults are 4.6). However I do agree that games should use better patches. Preferably they should go the MOD-file route. > From: Herman Dullink > Subject: InterWave Great news. Actually the best news was the win '95 support for native wavetable (is what I understood it to mean). I think it would be simple to write a program > that will convert from the .XM or .MOD format to .MID, if I had any > idea what the format was to any of these files. If anyone knows, XM format is given with a textfile with FT2. MID format is available at various sites. There are programs that already do this (MID2MOD etc) but they aren't that good and generally only do 4-track mods. (on EPAS etc I guess). Sorry about long message. To play S3M files (well, 8 voices or less at the moment) along with standard MOD files you need the Midas drivers for Windows. Using those drivers you can play S3M and MOD files using media player or any other MCI player. RE: Ace vs. Max. The Max has a lot more to offer than the Ace. If you replace your Max with an Ace then you will lose all recording ability, MIDI input and joystick input, the mixer, the CODEC chip with its compression, the CDROM interface, etc. I suggest that your friend should buy a Max. The Ace is cheaper because it has a lot less on it; no question about that. It does not replace the Max; it is meant to go alongside another card that has record, MIDI/joystick and CDROM capabilities but no 16-bit wavetable output. RE: USS16 USS16 is no longer on the basic disk set. Instead, they put it on the bonus disk set which also contains WaveLite, Power Tracks, Midisoft Recording Session, etc. This disk is not freely distributed and is not on any ftp sites. I thought that I might have seen it on a site once but that was probably an illegal upload. If you bought a used card and didn't get the bonus disks then you should contact the person who sold you the card; either they didn't give you the whole package or it is an old enough card that it doesn't come with the bonus disks. For most of the other bonus packages there are non-'lite' versions that you can buy but USS is only available from Gravis, unless I am wrong? So someone should get permission from Gravis to upload USS16. I won't do that unless I know I'm not breaking any copyright laws (or have the assurance from Gravis that it is OK to do so). Since most of the FTP sites I usually upload it to were down or full I haven't been able to upload it to every site, however it IS available from http://www.clinet.fi/~tnikkane and eventually from the FTP sites as well. I will put it into wuarchive.wustl.edu, archive.epas.utoronto.ca, and it will appear in ftp.wi.leidenuniv.nl in pub/audio/aria/players. The filename is morgl149.zip. Here's what's new since 1.10: ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Version 1.49 - Theba'95 release Since I got a little busy, I couldn't release 1.50 with everything I promised, so I'll release this 1.49 beta version for those who really need the new features and fixes. The older 1.10 non-beta version will still be available from my WWW home page. New features: - You can get the latest version and news, pictures and modules from my WWW home page at http://www.clinet.fi/~tnikkane. - Graphics mode has now a full-screen picture and the stars are gone. - The documentation is now in AmigaGuide hypertext format. The readme.exe is now mreadme.exe and is meant for reading the morgul.doc file. If you need to access the documentation inside Morgul with the F1/Alt-H function, you must have mreadme.exe in your path, or in the directory where Morgul was started from. Note that the regged.txt, morgul.faq and distroes files are now inside morgul.doc. - Added PCX background picture loader. With the -x command line or environment parameter you can load an external 320x200x256 PCX picture for background bitmap. You can also change the bitmap while Morgul is running by selecting the bitmap from the file list. NOTE: The bitmap MUST be 256 colors. Too large bitmaps may look strange or very strange. Support for the .PNG format will come eventually, .GIF never. - Text mode changes: 80x30 and 80x60 instead of 80x28 and 80x56. If you encounter problems with these text modes, like unable to change screen or scroll etc, please inform me about it. You MUST tell what your graphics adapter is. - Added automatic 4Dos descript.ion support; file descriptions are saved for modules, modules in archives and for pcx pictures. If a file already has a description, it will not be changed. - Added 4DosDescription option into config file. - Added the -586 switch. It is meant for computers having strange compatibility problems either with module loading or in the Dos shell. Try this switch first before sending a bug report. You should use it if you have ASPI drivers. - The Boxcolor option in the cfg file is now replaced with the Scopecolor option. It sets the color of the graphics scope. - The startup directory is now restored at exit. - You can abort the copying of multiple files if you press something while copying. - Added the -y cmdline/environment switch to disable the end screen. - The current tempo and row are now also displayed, and the tempo can be changed from the { and } keys. - The module being played can now be stopped :) ( the pause function has always existed but somebody wanted this so..) You can stop the module from F8, and restart from F5. Bugfixes: - OOPS! With the config file Soundcardaddress setting, Morgul used to read it as a DECIMAL value, but usually they are in HEX format, which of course caused lots of trouble. It is now fixed. - WAV files saved by Morgul are now much more compatible. - When in Suppress Unarchiver Output mode, HA texts no longer become visible. - Fixed scope problems with 16-bit cards. - Finally fixed the problem with .669 song names. - Various internal changes throughout the program. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 27 Apr 1995 22:04:47 -0400 (EDT) From: Pete Kilcullen Subject: Ravenloft II Hi! The compressed (ADPCM, mu-law, a-law) WAV files don't seem to conform to the Windows standard. I can't get them to play correctly through the ADPCM and PCM MCI drivers (ie. Media Player). Normal uncompressed WAV files seem to work, however. It may be possible to convert them.
